GU Grad Wins Rhodes Scholarship
Georgetown University graduate Maria Repnikova (SFS 06), of South Burlington, Vt., has been selected as a recipient of the 2006 Rhodes Scholarship. Repnikova joins former President Bill Clinton (SFS 68) and 20 other Georgetown graduates as a Rhodes Scholar.
I congratulate Maria for this prestigious recognition, said Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia. Her intelligence and leadership are remarkable and I am certain she will continue to make her mark on the world through her academic, personal and professional achievements.
Originally from Latvia, Maria Repnikovas personal experience as an immigrant to the United States has shaped her academic interests and life goals. After arriving in America at the age of 14 knowing no English, Repnikova immersed herself in English classes and became an honor student. She attributes her experience dealing with cultural transition to her scholarly interest in foreign language, culture and immigration issues. She has blended an interest in , developed after studying abroad in Beijing, with her curiosity about – a subject which she was prevented from studying while in – to produce her current research focus about Chinese immigrant labor in Northeast Russia.
