Commonwealth of Learning Fellowship Honours Omolewa
Yet more honour came the way of the Nigerian Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Prof. Michael Omolewa as he was presented the Honorary Fellowship of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) during the 4th Pan Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning which ended recently in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
It is the highest award by the COL. Vice President of COL, Asha Kanwar, in Omolewas citation described him as the quintessential optimist who has made opening doors for others almost a career. He has opened doors that have encouraged many young students and researchers to pursue education; he has guided many institutions in shaping and developing their responses to the challenges of Education F or All and the Millennium Development Goals.The Vice President recalled that, Omolewa, As President of the UNESCO General Conference, he was well known for making the goat and the lion drink side by side at the same watering hole. She then made a brave attempt at speaking the Awardees language saying, Professor Omolewa can be described very aptly in the Yoruba saying, Or-koo-reen mer-tah, yah yah mer-fah (Okunrin meta, ya ya mefa), which translates simply as a strong man with diverse powers of Born in Nigeria, she said, this child of the African awakening grew up dreaming about the emergence of a strong and united Africa, an -Africa free from ignorance, poverty and disease. He realised that the key to the fulfilment of his dream was education.
