Speaker-to-be was first Clean Election candidate

Like legions of other Maine students before and after him, Glenn Cummings made the pilgrimage to the State House as part of his civics education. Then a 17-year-old from Morse High School in Bath, he got a turn as a page, delivering messages from one legislator to another.

For Cummings, the lesson that opened his eyes to government 28 years ago never ended. I became very enamored with the Legislature, Cummings said of his experience.

Now, hes on the verge of being elected the 99th speaker of Maines House of Representatives, a position he didnt dream of attaining when he was a student, or even later when he became a high school teacher or was first elected to public office.
