Social Award
Alcan Inc and the International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) have awarded Indias Barefoot College the $1 million Alcan Prize for Sustainability 2OO6.The college has been accred¬ited in its pursuit to enable the countrys rural poor to build and maintain their own communi¬ties by giving them practical knowledge, such as how to create and manage solar power and rainwater harvesting systems. The annual award recognises NGOs, non-profit and civil society organisations working to build sustainable soci¬eties around the world. The adjudication panel also awards finalists grants of $15,000 each.
