Online learning demand outgrowing supply at Empire State College, ACC
The challenge of juggling family, work, and school is often too much for any one person to cram into an average week. And with the need for baby-sitters, transportation time, and scheduling against normal work hours, its the higher education thats usually the first to go. That is, until the Internet came along.
A study released last month by The Sloan Consortium, a group of colleges pursuing online programs, estimates that 850,000 more students took online courses in fall 2005 than the year before, making an almost 40 percent increase in online enrollment.
Kirk Starczewski, director of college affairs for Empire State College in Saratoga, said hes not surprised by the increase. Empire States Center for Distance Learning specializes in online courses, and has seen a steady increase in enrollment since the 1970s, when the center opened.
