Technology improving nontraditional learning

Education increases employee value and can keep a business a step ahead of the competition. Continuing education, correspondence courses, training seminars and myriad learning avenues are available for expanding ones knowledge and skills.

Virginia Tech has been an innovative leader in long-distance, graduate engineering degree programs for four decades. In the 1970s, there was the television studio scenario. Point- to-point microwave towers on the tallest campus buildings used satellite broadcasting in the 1980s. Classes were taken passively, like watching TV. To ask a question, a student would call on the telephone. By the mid-1990s, Virginia Tech outfitted its facilities with computer network installations and interactive video and audio options.

Theres a significant investment in equipment, states Mark Harden, manager of Video/Broadcast Services. When new technology comes along, we cautiously evaluate the gain, the timing and the cost.
