On March 29, Government ruled out the status of IIT to seven engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and West Bengal. The seven institutions are the Institute of Technology BHU, Varanasi, University College of Engineering combined with University College of Technology, both belonging to Osmania University, Bengal Engineering College, Howrah, Jadavpur University`s engineering and technology departments, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU Aligarh, Andhra University College of Engineering in Visakhapatnam and Cochin University of Science and Technology.
S.K. Joshi committee said that all seven colleges are far below the level of existing IITs in all criteria. The committee felt that its not correct to give the postion of IIT straigntway to these institutions. The Government referred the issue to the standing committee of the council of IIT which suggested that instead of converting them into IITs a “differential treatment” could be extended so that they develop further.
