Knowledge panel seeks four-fold increase in number of universities
Increasing universities from 350 to 1,500 is crucial if India is to sustain its growth. The National Knowledge Commission has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling for a systematic overhaul of the Indian higher education so that we can educate much larger numbers without diluting academic standards.
The NKC is not merely suggesting an expansion of the university system. It is also advocating smaller-sized universities. This will allow for better governance and ensure higher academic standards as well. Some of our universities are much too large, for ensuring academic standards and providing good governance. We need to create more appropriately scaled and more nimble universities.
