Canadian Varsity, Tata Scout For BE Students
Its raining good news on the Bengal Engineering College (now university) campus. A foreign university and one of Indias biggest business houses called on BEC on Tuesday to scout for its best and brightest.
While Windsor University, one of the leading institutions in Canada, wants some BEC students to complete their post-graduation on its campus, Tata Steel will pick up bright third-year students as trainees and pay them a monthly stipend of Rs 6,000 till they graduate. Then, these students will be absorbed in the company.
It is perhaps for the first time that BEC students are being offered scholarships to join a foreign university. It is a BEC alumni of the 1970 batch, Nihar Biswas, now the dean of engineering studies and research at Windsor University, who has made this possible. Biswas visited us on Tuesday and made the offer in writing.
Both universities will draw up an MoU in a month. We are absolutely thrilled, vice-chancellor of BEC, N.R. Banerjea, told.
The university will pick students from metallurgy, civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics and telecommunications departments. Biswas realises how difficult it is for an Indian student to pay foreign varsity fees. So the agreement is being drawn up in such a way that every undergraduate student will be given job opportunities on the campus to pay for his/her tuition fees and other expenses, Banerjea added.
Banerjea described the Tata Steel offer as an unheard of opportunity. Tata Steel has only approached IIT Kharagpur and BEC with this offer.
Traditionally, placements are done when students are well into their fourth year. In this case, as soon as they reach third year our students have the chance of getting picked up by an industry leader and even get a stipend for the rest of their student days, he said.
