    IIM proposed at Visakhapatnam

    The Andhra Pradesh government has taken initiatives to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Visakhapatnam, said chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

    Speaking at the inauguration of Ceratec-2007, an international ceramic seminar at Andhra University on Monday, he said the government had already requested the Centre to set up an IIM in the state.

    The state government was also taking steps to set up an education district in Visakhapatnam in about 1,000 acres, where foreign universities would be invited to set up centres, he said.

IIIT Intends Distance Education Centres

International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has submitted a proposal for consideration with the Andhra Pradesh government, to establish Distance Education campuses in different parts of the state. The campuses are projected to be opened in Vijayawada, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati among others. According to a press release, the proposal to this effect was placed before Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy by Raj Reddy, professor of Carnegie Mellon University USA, who is associated with the IIIT at Hyderabad. A four-day business student meet, GEM-2006, was held at Gandhi Institute erf Technology And Management (GITAM) in Visakhapatnam. Around 450 students from 37 business schools all across the country participated in this GITAM Excellence Meet. The COO (South Asia) of HSBC, Malcom Wagget, attended the function as the chief guest. Some other dignitaries who were also present in the inaugural session included M.V.VS. Murthy, GITAM president and for mer MP, Prof. L.I. Ugadi Award for Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice Chancellor

The Delhi Telugu Academy has chosen Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice Chancellor V Balamohan Das for the Ugadi Puraskar in 2006 for his contribution to the field of education. He will receive the award at Ravindra Bharati in Hyderabad on April 2. The other recipients include Pratap C.Reddy, K.Ratna Prabha, K.Vara Prasad Reddy, Ravi S. IIM-B seats can be increased only in phased manner

Source The Hindu Date 2006-07-27 Information The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (IIM-B), which is faced with an acute shortage of teachers, has said that its student intake can be increased by 54 per cent only in a staggered manner over three to four years and not in a year as proposed by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. The proposed increase in intake was to compensate for the 27 per cent reservation announced for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutes of higher education, including IIMs. IIMs cannot implement the increase (in student intake) in one go.
