IIM proposed at VisakhapatnamIIM proposed at Visakhapatnam The Andhra Pradesh government has taken initiatives to set up an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Visakhapatnam, said chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. Speaking at the inauguration of Ceratec-2007, an international ceramic seminar at Andhra University on Monday, he said the government had already requested the Centre to set up an IIM in the state. The state government was also taking steps to set up an education district in Visakhapatnam in about 1,000 acres, where foreign universities would be invited to set up centres, he said. 100% FDI in higher education proposed GoM says only 50% can be permitted in the sector. The Union human resource ministry today announced that 100 per cent foreign direct investment would be allowed under the law proposed for higher education, even as the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the issue had said yesterday that FDI of only up to 50 per cent could be permitted in the sector. International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) has submitted a proposal for consideration with the Andhra Pradesh government, to establish Distance Education campuses in different parts of the state. The campuses are projected to be opened in Vijayawada, Warangal, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati among others. According to a press release, the proposal to this effect was placed before Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy by Raj Reddy, professor of Carnegie Mellon University USA, who is associated with the IIIT at Hyderabad. Shillong IIM likely next year Dilly-dallying by the Union ministry of human resource development is likely to dampen the chances of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong becoming functional this year. The proposed premier business school will start classes only from the next academic year. With Common Admission Test (CAT) scores having been announced, the admission process to the six IIMs is currently under way. Programme in Nuclear Science and Technology, proposed to be launched this coming session. Source The Hindu Date 2006-07-27 Information The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (IIM-B), which is faced with an acute shortage of teachers, has said that its student intake can be increased by 54 per cent only in a staggered manner over three to four years and not in a year as proposed by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. The proposed increase in intake was to compensate for the 27 per cent reservation announced for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutes of higher education, including IIMs. IIMs cannot implement the increase (in student intake) in one go.
