Now practical learning may be a distant dream
The Delhi HCs decision to discontinue distance learning courses requiring practical knowledge has brought to light the debate of whether such courses really help students.
In a recent decision, the Delhi High Court has said that professional courses through distance education programmes should be discouraged because they do not impart any practical training. Sounds logical youd say, but it can hardly bring any happy tidings for all those young professionals whore already pursuing the course or those who are looking forward to taking them up. But the question of whether those enrolled really benefit from such courses beyond the fact that it provides them with a degree seems to hang thick in the air.
The announcement was made by the court after the hearing of a PIL filed by the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP), seeking recognition of those institutes which are offering such correspondence courses in Physiotherapy. There are almost 54 universities and about 12 open universities that offer such correspondence courses requiring practical training. The Bachelors degree in Nursing, Hospitality and Hotel Administration, Information Technology or the Post Graduate Diploma in Radio Production and Management being some of them.
