IGNOU’s new blueprint Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is undertaking one of the most important activi¬ties, in years to come, as it is prepar¬ing its five-year action plan, apart from its short-term three-year action plan.

In keeping with the delibera¬tions of the eleventh five-year plan, IGNOU has identified for itself three core areas to work upon. Also, it has decided to be the finishing school for the unemployed educated.

According to V N Rajasekharan Pillai, vice-chancellor, IGNOU: “We have identified three core areas -we will be identifying the types of knowledge and skilled workforce which is required for regional, national and global development. Secondly, to identify what skills and knowledge is available with our graduates coming out of colleges and institutions and what is the gap and what are the skills required. And finally, IGNOU will try to provide the additional knowl¬edge and skills.”

The primary aim of this five-year action plan is an attempt to make the unemployed educated of India employable. “We are going to pro¬vide the additional knowledge and skills, “said Pillai.

Another major initiative of the Open University is to establish School of Vocational Studies across the country. It will be operating from all the regional centres of IGNOU. The courses will be localised and customised to the regional needs.

The university will also carry out an impact analysis of its courses in order to consolidate its pro¬grammes. According to the vice chancellor, the university is also preparing a blueprint for Open and Distance Learning for the eleventh five-year plan.
