Parents Urged To Give Children Quality Education
Mrs. Elizabeth Quarmyne, Assistant Director of the Basic Education Unit of the Ministry of Education has stressed the need for parents to give their children quality education, as education is the bedrock for effective and efficient socio-economic development of every nation.
It is a collective responsibility if one has to build our nation, she noted.
According to him, government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that every Ghanaian child enjoys quality education at least to the basic level.
At the closing ceremony of the Bakple (Likpe) Students Union (BASU) National Congress in Accra, she said national educational goals, among others, enjoin the individual to take up the spirit of self reliance that would enable them be responsible for their well being.
Mrs. Quarmyne charged the youth of Likpe to transmit the knowledge, skills and refined attitudes gained through education into reproductive activities that would bring development and growth.
To cope with technologies and changes in the global world, she reiterated government`s commitment to ensuring that the youth of this country develop their intellectual capacities, technical skills and abilities.
This, she said, was forcefully expressed in the new education reform envisaged for this country.
Addressing the Paramount Chief of the Likpe traditional area, the union and some students of the school, she said in the new reform, the number of years for basic education has been increased to 9 years to 11years.
Two years of kindergarten have been added to primary level to enable children lay a solid foundation for primary education,she underscored.
Preparing to implement the reform, she said government had directed that the school curriculum be reviewed to reflect the new aspirations and also train more teachers to handle the new kindergartens to be established in the next couple of years.
She said as an association committed to development, it would be best if they provided advocacy and created confortable room for the younger ones to take advantage of education in the area.
The National President of the Likpe Students Union, Henry Mblerson Somevi, attributed the poor performance of schools in the locality to poverty.
He said because of this, few pupils leave the basic schools to the second cycle institutions and in some cases, the best candidate in the schools hardly obtain minimum entry requirement to the second cycle ones.
Pupils` performance in schools is highly disappointing and a great worry to parents and the whole society, he explained.
He appealed to the Minister of Education and other philanthropists to assist the school with more classrooms, furniture and other logistics to enhance learning.
The Bakple (Likpe) Students Union is an association of second cycle schools and tertiary students from the Likpe traditional area in the Volta region. It was formed over thirty years ago with the vision to constitute a platform for unity and fraternity among members.
