Govt. Deserves Praise For Special Education Push

THE tradition being set by the Punjab government to recognise special students is indeed praiseworthy, but it should take measures to ensure that future governments also follow it.

The Punjab government has increased the budget for special education and has set up a degree college in Lahore as part of its plans to open new special schools and institutions. Recently, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi set a new tradition by awarding a gold medal and Rs 100,000 to Zara Hussain, a hearing impaired girl who topped the Punjab Universitys Master of Arts in Special Education in the annual examinations in 2004.

He also announced the Chief Ministers Special Education Gold Medal and a cash prise of Rs 100,000 for students who top the MA Special Education annual examinations every year.

Geology Department teachers locked the laboratory to oppose the merger of the Punjab Universitys (PU) Postgraduate Centre for Earth Sciences and Institute of Environmental Sciences into the College of Environmental and Earth Sciences.

Lt Gen ® Arshad Mahmood, PU vice chancellor, announced the merger a few weeks ago. However, senior PU officials say that only the statutory body, PU syndicate, is authorised to merge departments. They have protested the vice chancellors decision.
