100% FDI in higher education proposed
GoM says only 50% can be permitted in the sector.
The Union human resource ministry today announced that 100 per cent foreign direct investment would be allowed under the law proposed for higher education, even as the Group of Ministers (GoM) on the issue had said yesterday that FDI of only up to 50 per cent could be permitted in the sector.
RP Agarwal, secretary, higher education, who was speaking at a conference on the social sector, said 100 per cent FDI would be allowed in higher education.
The reason he gave was simple: It was a commitment made by the country at the WTO in 2003.
