Sex Education In School: Better To Learn It Properly
Sex education cannot be swept under the carpet anymore, said the Minister for Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Shahrizat Abdul Jalil yesterday.
She was speaking at the launch of the TV3s Wanita Hari In is new logo and programme at Sri Pentas in Bandar Utama.
Shahrizat, who was the first woman to be interviewed live on the new-format programme, said children should learn about their own sexuality in the proper way.
This is to prevent them from getting the wrong perception on the Internet which could give rise to promiscuity, she said.
The Ministry will liaise with Education Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein and Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Datuk Rais Yatim before tabling the proposal to introduce sex education in Parliament.
The module will work within the confines of the various religious and cultural sentiments in the country, she said.
The education will not only familiarise adolescents about the biological aspects of their bodies but also how to handle emotional changes within them without neglecting the spiritual aspects.
We want to give our younger generation a proper understanding of themselves sexually and spiritually and guide them towards living a more wholesome life while avoiding the pitfalls in society, said Shahrizat.
She congratulated TV3 in hosting Wanita Hari Ini in the last eight years and said the programme has presented women issues in a comprehensive and fruitful manner.
She was also grateful that Malaysian women are enjoying similar status as their men in opportunities for education and employment.
The new-look Wanita Hari Ini will have a live audience in the studio every Tuesday. Issues such as fashion, law, parenthood, health, and family finance will be discussed.
The topic on Mondays WHI will be on husband-wife relationship; Wednesday on beauty, health and medicines, Thursday again on husband-wife issues, while it will be on parenting on Friday.
