Delhi Universitys department of chemistry is contemplating the introduction of green chemistry

DU promotes green chemistry
Following the deaths of two professors due to cancer, Delhi Universitys (DU) department of chemistry is contemplating the introduction of green chemistry as part of all science courses, even at the postgraduate level. Commended by Deepak Pental, vice chancellor, DU, the proposal will be tabled at a one-day workshop in the varsity on March 10.

Green chemistry is an attempt to make chemicals eco friendly by nullifying all health hazardous content. Our workshop is about a strong belief in the enforcement of the fundamentals of green chemistry within our curricula and laboratories. Educators of green chemistry in India are networking in a big way. This shall result in broadening the conceptual base and popularising the subject and its experiments, said R K Sharma, professor and coordinator of DUs green chemistry network centre.

DU has already introduced the paper as part of UG courses in physical sciences, applied physical sciences, life sciences and applied life sciences. The department of chemistry has also received the Chem RAWN XIV-GCI award in 2006, a grant offered by American Chemical Societys Green Chemistry Institute (ACS-GCI) to developing nations.

In his letter to Sharma, Paul T Anastas, director, ACSGCI, said: This year we are able to offer you $10,000 in funding for your project to develop a green chemistry network in India. The project criteria for the grant include potential to advance green chemistry in developing and emerging countries, potential for collaboration and long-term relationship building with GCI chapters and maximising impact by leveraging resources.
