Govt To Advertise Senior Education Jobs

The Government will next week advertise all posts held by provincial directors of education (PDEs) and district education officers (DEOs).

The country has eight PDEs and 78 DEOs. The move is aimed at streamlining service in the education sector.

Education Secretary Prof George Godia said serving PDEs and DEOs who have the minimum qualifications to be spelled out are free to apply for the posts.

Those who have weaker academic qualifications and were probably promoted through considerations other than merit will be sacked, he warned.

Godia said the PDEs and DEOs would be paid better salaries and allowances.

They will no longer be hired on Job Group L/M as is the case currently. They need to be paid better than most teachers if they have to command respect and discharge their duties well, Godia told participants during a staffing workshop at the Kenya Institute of Education, Nairobi.

Sources said the Government had worked out details of the terms and conditions of service.

The new officers will be hired on contracts that could be extended upon satisfactory performance.

Currently most DEOs are in Job Groups L and M while PDEs are in P and Q, grades that are similar or lower than those of classroom teachers and secondary school principals.
