IGNOU to offer other colleges courses
Awaiting the final nod from the ministry for human resources development (MHRD), the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is set to deliver courses from select colleges across the country affiliated to different conventional universities.
IGNOU is finalising a proposal for the MHRD for online affiliation of colleges of excellence, so that students who have missed out on entering the campuses of these colleges can still pursue the same course and get access to the respective college libraries and interact with faculties as well.
According to the proposal, IGNOU will first identify some of the top-quality conventional colleges affiliated to different universities and help them offer online version of some of their popular courses. Moreover, the students pursuing the online courses will also appear for the same examinations as their on-campus peers.
V N Rajasekharan Pillai, vice chancellor, IGNOU, said:This is a new concept wherein IGNOU will not be offering its own courses, but help some of the best colleges across the country to offer their courses and certification would also be of the conventional university to which the college is affiliated. IGNOU will only be providing its expertise in delivery.
According to Pillai, this would mean an optimum utilisation of the intellectual expertise of the faculties of the select colleges and their courses, which in turn would benefit maximum number of students, as it will to some extent, do away with the on-campus seat limitation.
This initiative would involve colleges of excellent reputation, private-aided quality institutions and funding agencies like UGC. Besides, IGNOU is seeking a policy level intervention from the MHRD as well.
