Samy Vellu: Hire Retired Tamil School Teachers
Retired teachers should be engaged to teach Tamil as an elective subject in national schools, said MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
He said there were thousands of retired Tamil language teachers who were locally trained and whose experiences were still invaluable.
He said locally-trained teachers would understand the local cultures better than those who come from other countries.
Since these teachers are willing to work, they must be given the preference to teach at national schools instead of getting teachers from India to fill the shortage, he said after launching SMK Methodists 75th anniversary celebration here yesterday.
He was commenting on Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Husseins statement that the Government would hire teachers from China and India to teach Mandarin and Tamil as elective subjects in national schools.
Despite opposition from the National Union of the Tea-ching Profession, Hishammuddin said ministry officials would visit Tamil Nadu and China soon to make the necessary arrangements to recruit teachers.
On his trip to Iran with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, said the Economic Planning Unit had approved RM3.8mil to fund a feasibility study for two railway track projects there.
The project by the Malaysian Mining Corp Bhd will be a 225km track connecting Qazvin, Rasht and Anzali, and a 260km track from Kermanshah to Khosravi.
