UI Student William Liechty Wins 2007 Gates Cambridge Scholarship
University of Iowa College of Engineering student William Liechty is one of 48 U.S. winners of a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, a highly selective, international award. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and offers students from around the world the opportunity to study at Cambridge University in England. Liechty is one of only 13 winners from public institutions.
Liechty, from Marion, Iowa, will head to Cambridge in October to begin graduate studies in chemical engineering. At the UI, Liechty is a chemical and biochemical engineering major and was a 2005 winner of the Goldwater Scholarship, a national award which recognizes potential for a career in research in math, science and engineering. He did research with Allan Guymon, associate professor, and Mani Subramanian, professor, both in the UI Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.
At Cambridge, he will be involved in research on new technologies in electro-optic polymer composites.
