Union To Ensure Local Teachers Given Priority
The National Union of Tamil School Teachers is spearheading a move to ensure that locally-trained and experienced teachers get priority when the Education Ministry starts recruiting tutors to teach Tamil in national schools from next year.
The union is compiling data on the 400-over temporary teachers in Tamil schools whose contracts were terminated at the beginning of this year, Tamil Nesan and Malaysia Nanban reported.
The dailies quoted union secretary-general P. Tharmalingam as saying that the details would include their teaching experience. Many of them were qualified to enter teacher training colleges but had not been accepted, he added.
We want to make sure that locals are given priority before the Government turns to India. For this, we need all their particulars to convince the ministry. If possible, we will urge the ministry to place them in colleges first.
All teachers concerned should give their co-operation and submit the relevant particulars to their respective state representatives by May 23, he said.
Malaysia Nanban reported that national service could be introduced in India if the suggestion by the countrys President Abdul Kalam is taken up by the government.
Abdul Kalam said a two-year stint for all students in secondary schools and colleges might be necessary in view of the deteriorating discipline among Indian youths.
The fast-increasing social problems among them is an area of concern. If the trend is left unchecked, there will be serious problems. If India is to become a developed nation by 2020, this trend must change, he said at an army function in Jothpur, India.
