Officials urge students to check for scholarship fraud
Students seeking scholarships may end up paying more than what they expect. Scholarship fraud, which occurs when students seek scholarships or grants from sources that charge for their services, can prevent students from receiving anything in return.
Joyce Hall, Purdues executive director of the Division of Financial Aid, said scholarship fraud happens often enough for the Federal Trade Commission to have an entire Web site dedicated to the problem.
I dont know if it is getting worse, but we do have a few families each year that ask if a scholarship service is on the up and up, Hall said.
