IGNOU Announces New Research Scholarships

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Distance Education Council (DEC) have jointly announced 200 annual research and teaching assistantships, starting 2007, integrating research activity along with the fellowship programme. The decision at IGNOUs academic council meeting approved the guidelines for awarding the IGNOU-DEC Research and Teaching Assistantship (RTA).
The objective of the scheme is to attract the best talent for teaching-cum-research in both the general and open and distance learning (ODL) pedagogy.
The RTA aims to provide opportunities for undertaking advanced studies and research. All selected candidates will be registered for PhDs under the aegis of IGNOU or any other open university.
An RTA scholar will be given Rs 10,000 + HRA per month for three years with an annual contingent grant of Rs 20,000. The work done in the three years would be assessed in accordance with the research councils recommendations and if a candidate is offered a senior research and teaching assistantship (SRTA), he or she would get an extension of two more years.
Candidates who are 25 years of age on July 1 of the year of award and bear an excellent academic record till the postgraduate level, are eligible for the fellowship. The age limit may be relaxed by five years for women candidates of SC/ST/PH. The reservation policy for this programme will be as per the government of Indias policy for SC/ST/PH/women candidates.
