Scientists, students flock to hear Kalam

Thursday was a special occasion at the Federal Institute of Technology here as scientists and students at this prestigious institute came in large numbers to hear what President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a fellow scientist by training had on offer.

And those assembled at the Institute with the French acronym EPFL were not disappointed both in terms of the quality and depth of his presentation. Seeing you as the President is a great encouragement for all the scientists the world over and gives us hope, the institute president Patrick Aebischer told Mr. Kalam after his 30-minute Science is borderless power point presentation that drew repeated applause in a packed hall. Switzerland had declared it a Science Day in honour of the President.

The President focussed on his favourite theme of convergence of information-bio-nano technology for the benefit of humankind. That the speech evoked response from both Indian and local students was best summed up by Swiss Luca Wullschteger who asserted that his esteem for India, which had a top scientist as its President, had gone up. He spoke like one of us, the young Swiss student who heard more about the country from an Indian origin classmate, Sebastian Pittet.

There were some 50 Indian scientists and technical personnel who arrived at the campus to hear and meet the President including a software specialist couple, Vishal and Preeti Moshil, who drove down from Zurich to be in time for the event.

Enthusiastic scholars from India took extra effort to shake hands with the President who made it a point to share his thoughts on the stream of study they were pursuing. For instance, he told Vasu Singh from Mumbai doing research in neurosciences that he should come up with a solution to help children who suffer from autism while Mohandeep Subramanyam, a chemical engineer, got a different piece of advice.

In response to a question from a Swiss scientist as to what made the President declare that human mind and creativity could not be beaten by a computer, Mr. Kalam said in his view the human brain was an evolution of genetic formation over the years and a machine would not come up to that level.

Mr. Kalam also said he was personally against human cloning, a technology that at best could be restricted to create body parts to replace defective ones.
