The 2008 international Fulbright science and technology award for outstanding foreign students is sponsored by the US department of state for PhD study at top US institutions in science, technology or engineering, beginning August/September 2008. The fellowship will provide for activities, tuition and fees; monthly stipend for up to 36 months; books and equipment, research and professional conference allowances; J-1 visa sponsorship for upto five years; round-trip airfare from fellows home city to the host institution in the United States; health and accident coverage as per US government guidelines and specially tailored enrichment activities. After three years, the US universities will cover the remaining expenses towards completion of a PhD. If necessary, after five years, the US department of state will transfer sponsorship to the host university assuming satisfactory continuing progress towards PhD completion.
Requirements: Responsible Indian citizen; proficient in English with a recent TOEFL score, or equivalent, like IELTS, of 580 or higher; a high level of academic/professional achievement; hold a valid Indian passport no later than May 5,2007; be present in India at the time of submitting the application and for the interview, if required; be eligible for leave, if employed; in good health; not applying for or holding permanent residence, green card, in the United States; have completed an equivalent of a US bachelors degree from a recognised Indian university with at least 60% marks, or a completed masters degree, if the bachelors degree is of less than four years duration, before August 1, 2008. Eligible fields include aeronautics and astronomies/aeronautical engineering; astronomy/planetary sciences; biology; chemistry; computer sciences/engineering; engineering in electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum; environmental science/engineering, geology/earth and atmospheric sciences, information sciences/engineering, materials science/engineering, mathematics, neuroscience/brain and cognitive sciences, oceanography and physics.
Submission: In addition to submitting the application online, send a printout of the completed online application form, and other documents mentioned, to the Executive Director, USEFI, Fulbright House,12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110 001, by May 5, 2007.
