Zonal centres for IGNOU
The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is being restructured and five zonal centres in North, East, West, South and North-East regions are being established for autonomy and decentralisation. The decentralisation process shall be undertaken in phases during the 11th plan. Since its inception in 1985, the university was functioning under a three-tier structure -the headquarters, regional centers and study centers. Now, zonal centres will be established for autonomy and decentralisation. The activities to be decentralised and delegated to the proposed zonal centres include - offering contextualised, local specific courses/programmes in regional languages, having functional autonomy on various regional services, delegating the Regional Services Division functions to these centers, processing student admission forms, finalising admission and evaluating answer scripts to term-end examination by spot evaluation and appointing part-time functionaries at the learner support centres.
