Hutt Students Win Scholarships

Filed under:

HUTT South MP Trevor Mallard recently announced that nine Hutt South students are among the Wellington recipients of this years Prime Ministers Scholarships. The athletes are amongst a group of 658 nationwide who have been offered a Prime Ministers Athlete Scholarship this year, allowing them to pursue their studies, as well as reach their sporting goals. According to Mr Mallard, sport plays a fundamental role in our national identity and the Labour-led government is committed to supporting our elite athletes, as well as investing in the health and well being of all New Zealanders. Providing athletes with the opportunity to gain a tertiary or vocational qualification while they compete allows them to maintain a healthy balance in their lives, and ensures they have career options after sport, Mr Mallard said. It is important that we support our elite athletes to undertake study in their chosen field so that at the same time they can concentrate on achieving their sporting goals, with many representing New Zealand in their chosen sport, he said. This years recipients include Lower Hutts Stephanie Simmons, who won five golds at the New Zealand Karate Open last year. She also performed well at the 2006 Oceania Championships where she came first in U21, second in the Senior Womens open and received two team golds in the Junior and Senior Womens events. Stephanie is studying for a Diploma in Electrical Engineering at WELTEC, and hopes to compete at the Commonwealth tournament in June and at the Junior World Championships in October this year. The scholarships are administered by SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) through the New Zealand Academy of Sport, SPARCs high performance network.
