DELHI University (DU), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and University Grants Commission (UGC) may, soon enter into a partnership to give a new dimension to the education system in the country.
This was declared at the National Seminar-cum-work-hop on Convergence of Conventional and Distance Modes of Education and national launch of Training of Academic Counsellors for the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) System from May 12-26, 2007 which was inaugurated by D Purandeswari, minister of state for education.
Deepak Pental, vice-chancellor, Delhi University, stressed the need for question banks by teachers instead of reliance on keys by the students.VC, IGNOU emphasised that a possible collaboration between 1GNOU-UGC-DU shall be essential for others to emulate, which was later reiterated by the DU VC.
It was unanimously agreed by R P Agarwal, secretary MHRD, Sukdheo Thorat, chairman, UGC, V N Rajasekharan Pillai,VC, IGNOU, Pental and N K Sinha, joint secretary, distance learning, MHRD that it is essential to converge the conventional tools of education with the information and communication technology of ODL where, cost can be minimised and quality enhanced.
While the DUVC hoped that IGNOU would collaborate with DU for the course material, UGC offered a three-year scheme for a combined IGNOU-UGC fellowship.
