Money still doesnt grow on trees, but there are better reasons to plant a sapling. As the corporate world scrambles for a new generation of future business leaders, one that values both the profit and social potential of business, management schools are pitching in with their enormous talent pool.
Enter the world of social venture competition (SVC), a global contest where management students are encouraged to submit business plans for self-sustainable and socially relevant projects. Corporate social responsibility might yet be a non-starter in India Inc, but the new breed of wannabe entrepreneurs raises hopes. Tremendous hopes.
From information kiosks for cotton farmers in Andhras suicide belt; power projects tailored for remote villages that work on bio-gas; community kitchen programmes for slums that seeks to exploit the advantages of modern warehousing, and to doctor-less health centres, Indian students are taking the lead in SVC and proving themselves on the ground.
