IIM Offshore campus delayed by six months

The first offshore campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Singapore will not be taking off this year. IIM Bangalores Singapore campus, which was scheduled to start from this September, will be delayed by at least six months.

The delay is because of the various reasons like the curriculum has not been finalised, the infrastructure is not in place and official go-ahead from the HRD ministry is still awaited.

As per the revised schedule, the Singapore campus, which will be located in the Bhavans India International School campus, will be operational by January 2006.

Through the Singapore campus, IIM-B aims to offer unmatched management education to business executives in Hong Kong, China, Taiw a n , Japan,Malaysia,Thailand,Philippines and Indonesia.

The institute is also deliberating the option of admitting students for the Singapore campus through CAT. The Institute is considering the option of using Common Admission Test (CAT)/GMAT as a basis for admitting students to the programme proposed to be offered in Singapore, said Mr V. Anand Ram, dean, organisation-development and adminstration of IIM-B.

If accepted, it will be the first time CAT scores will be accepted for an international programme offered by any of the IIMs outside India.

Since IIM-B will be offering only part-time courses at its offshore campus, only those with some work experience will be admitted. Once it opens, the offshore campus will offer shortduration courses for middle and senior-level executives and later graduate to start an executive MBA programme targeted at CEOs in South East Asia and North Asia. It also plans to offer specialised programme for family managed business and programmes in management research and consulting.
