A committee set up by Delhi University has drafted the syllabus for a three-year M.Tech. Programme in Nuclear Science and Technology, proposed to be launched this coming session. However, the Faculty of Science as well as the academic and executive councils have-yet to approve the syllabus. Says Professor M. P. Sri vastava, Head, Department of Physics, which proposes to run the programme, approval from various committees has yet to be taken.
The eligibility requirements for the programme, too, are still to be finalised. According to Srivastava, a member of the committee which drafted the syllabus, the applicant should have a background in Physics, such as a B.Sc. (Honours) Physics and B.Sc. (Physical Sciences) or a B.Sc. (General) Physical Sciences. About 20-30 seats are proposed to be offered through an entrance examination.
The proposed curriculum earmarks the first two years for classroom teaching and final year for on-site training at a research laboratory or nuclear reactor site. There will be a one-year project in final year. Students may be sent to the Institute for Plasma Research or a reactor site, says Srivastava. We may draw faculty from various institutes, the Inter-University Accelerator Centre and Atomic Energy Commission labs. We will involve them in teaching whatever their speciality is. An apex committee including members from the universitys Department of Physics and various labs such as Institute for Plasma Research, Nuclear Power Corporation and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have designed the syllabus.
