Inspiration for the Youth
Times News Network Several forms of Indian classical music and instruments are on the verge of extinction because of lack of patronage from the younger generations. The Legends of India was established in 1998 to promote art among the youth. At the recent Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony, organised by the society, Soli Sorabjee, former attorney general and a patron, said: Artistes give grace and meaning to a civilisation.
For the first time the award was presented to two artistes. This years recipients were Mrinalini Sarabhai, Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer, and Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, sarod maestro. While accepting the award, Das Gupta said: I am trained to be a mechanical engineer but look where my passion has got me today. According to Sarabhai, she always knew that she wanted to be a dancer but had a difficult time finding a teacher, hence she has opened a school in Ahmedabad, so that legends continue to grow. The award ceremony underlined the importance of promoting arts among the ,youth, if Indias tradition of music and dance was to be kept alive.
The society also organised an annual sangeet festival. We hope these initiatives encourage young people to take up Indian music, be it in any form, by seeing the examples of such great legends, , said Dipayan Mazumdar, chairman. Legends of India.
