No one knows for sure how much technology is used in clinical trials, but by some estimates its use is tipping point-ready. Recent studies put the rate of adoption of electronic data capture (EDC) at upwards of 50 percent by the end of 2007, nearly double the levels in 2005. Implementation of clinical trial management systems is also growing at a healthy clip, increasing at a guesstimated rate of 20 percent annually.
With technology acceptance finally becoming standard fare in the clinical development process, there is a need for proper training in the use of the latest efficiency-creating solutions. Sponsors and contract research organizations (CROs) are scrambling to develop, implement, update, and track who is being trained and when, both internally and at the investigative site level. This is no small task, given the global nature of studies taking place in multiple languages, time zones, cultures, and with varying access to technology.
Despite the challenges, smart sponsors and CROs recognize that training is essential for ensuring an acceptable level of self-sufficiency and to recoup a meaningful return on investment. Without training or with an inadequate effort, stakeholders are left with forcing acceptance of new technology on unsuspecting staff and sites – hardly a recipe for success.
