HRD Ministry to setup a Distance Education regulator

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is planning to setup an independent Distance Education Regulator which would maintain and monitor the standards of open / distance learning in the country.

A Distance Education Council (DEC) functioning under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is already looking after the distance mode of education in the country.

According to the Ministry, DEC will be an Independent Statuary body which will promote, coordinate and regulate the standards of all distance education programs offered in the country. A Cabinet note to this effect is already in circulation.
