PGIMER, Chandigarh, might become the first medical institution in the country to train journalists on health issues

Journalism studies at medical institute
THE Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, might become the first medical institution in the country to train journalists on health issues. If given the go-ahead by the academic committee, the idea mooted by Rajesh Kumar, head, school of public health, PGIMER, can provide a new dimension to the two-year Masters in Public Health (MPH) programme due for launch within a month.

As part of the MPH course, health journalism is being proposed as an elective subject, among others such as communicable diseases, environmental and reproductive health and childcare. Though there are Masters in Health Journalism programmes on offer at different universities in UK and the US, health journalism will initially be taught as a small component at PGIMER, rather than a full-fledged programme. Says Kumar: The special course called health promotion will deal with advocacy of health issues. This will prove highly relevant, because when government initiates procedure towards a legislation or the making of a policy, the media plays an important role in placing the agenda into perspective.

Kumar added that journalists writing on health issues should have a certain understanding of different health-related issues, and this course would provide the same. Iterating the need for such a programme, Kumar cited examples of issues likeTB and HIV, which have either been misreported or exaggerated due to a lack of comprehension regarding the background on the journalists behalf.

In most western countries, health journalism is a specialisation. For instance, a British journalist is visiting PGIMER to gain a better understanding of female foeticide. Our journalists should also be given such opportunities in order to sensitise them towards such social issues, said Kumar, adding, Other topics that require media attention include hiked prices of life-saving drugs, pharmaceutical companies dealing in substandard medicines, drug addiction, over-the-counter sale of drugs, et cetera.

While the MPH programme - open to both medical and non-medical graduates - will commence from July this year, the health journalism component is expected to get a clearance from the authorities, by the next academic session.
