Another male bastion has fallen in the Capital. One of the best centres for higher education, Delhi has now emerged as the education capital for women. Nearly 43% of all girls in the age group of 18 to 24 years in Delhi are studying in higher education institutions. This puts them ahead of boys with an enrolment ratio of just 33%.
For the whole country, the enrolment ratio in higher education is just 8% for girls and 12% for boys, according to the latest educational statistics for 2004-05, released last month by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The data covers all recognised educational institutions.
In Delhi, although boys outnumber girls in PhD programmes, more girls are doing postgraduate courses like MSc and MA, than boys. In arts and sciences undergraduate courses, girls and boys are neck and neck. Commerce courses appear to be disliked by girls with boys outnumbering them by a 3:2 ratio. There are a total of 1.6 lakh undergraduate students and about 30,000 post graduate students in Delhi.
