Promotion of education through cricket! Sounds new in India but not for Aussies. Their cricket team is in Mumbai not to exhibit any field exploits but to publicise the University.
They are the ambassadors of New South Wales University (NSWU) currently touring India to play friendly matches with various Universities and clubs across the India.
We are touring India to promote our University from the educational point of view and also improve our relations with the Indian Universities. Our University has an assessment programme for Asian school children and we are advertising that in association with Macmillan India, said Peter Richardson, assistant manager NSWU cricket team.
Asked what cricket had to do with the publicity of the University in India, Richardson replied, Well our manager, Geoff Lawson, former Australia fast bowler knew cricket is a religion in India and is the best option for the promotion of our University here.
David Carson, the Aussie University captain, stressed on improving sports ties between Indian and Australian Universities.
We are in India since April 10 and have played in many places like Dharamsala, Mohali, Pune and now Mumbai. I was impressed with the quality of cricket, said Carson, while relaxing in the dressing room at Mumbai Police Gymkhana after heat had taken the toll on him and his teammates during a match with Mumbai University.
