THE National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC} recently organised a day-long workshop for 26 heads of state-level Quality Assurance Cells (QACs) at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. The objective was to enhance awareness regarding NAACs assessment and accreditation methodology, and to draw out an action plan for QAC activities during the year 2007-08.
Ravichandra Reddy, academic consultant, NAAC, said: These training sessions are significant to the role of QACs as nodal agencies for promotional drives of various NAAC initiatives, and as partners in the assessment process.
V S Prasad, director, NAAC, stressed that during the 11th five-year plan, QACs should be established in all states, to promote awareness about NAACs new accreditation process for colleges and universities. QACs of each state must facilitate and encourage a phased accreditation of colleges. Colleges that are approaching the end of their five-year accreditation are required to apply for re-accreditation, he said.
Prasad said the QACs should also strive to establish internet facilities and encourage innovative best practices across colleges state-wide, apart from developing a database of all the states colleges.
Elaborating on the annual exercise, he said, This interaction also allows QAC heads to share experiences. They have also been asked to prepare an assessment plan for the next year.
NAAC has started identifying assessors who will travel across the country to accredit colleges and universities.
