Doctorate fellowships
The fellowships for doctorate studies in Germany are for those who wish to carry out research projects at German universities/institutes for obtaining a PhD degree there, especially for the structured doctoral study programmes. Fellowship benefits include maintenance allowance of Euro 715 for Master’s degree holders, Euro 975 for PhD scholars with at least two years of teaching or research experience; a lump sum towards air fare from India to Germany and back; a study and research subsidy for those staying longer than six months; health insurance; free tuition, boarding, lodging plus pocket allowance during the period of the German language course (preceding studies/research); etc. Duration is three years, in exceptional cases, up to four years maximum, preceded by the compulsory six-months’ German language course. The award will initially be limited to one year. Extensions are then given one year at a time depending on the evaluation of the work done so far.
Requirements: Candidates must not be more than 32 years of age on October 1 of the year in which the fellowship begins; Master’s degree, with first class at Bachelor’s or Master’s level; residing in India at the time of application; have an admission letter from a German university/institute to study for a doctorate degree/must get confirmation from the German university/institute stating that they fulfill the requirements to carry out doctoral studies there. Candidates in the fields of humanities and social sciences must have a good knowledge of the German language. No research grants available for continuing medical training.
