In last years CAT, this Kanpur guy was the star sibling in the IIM brood — Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad — with 100 percentile (99.97 percentile in QA, 99.92 in VA and 99.55 in DI) in his fourth but first serious attempt.
After his final-year B.Tech exams at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in May 2004, Rahul Luthra took CAT coaching for two-three months at IIT-K. Then the Electrical Engineer picked up a job offer to figure out whether I wanted to be manager or get into research, says Luthra who had stints at Oracle in Hyderabad and then at Barclays in Mumbai as an Analyst I used my (coaching) notes. I used to take the test series of Career Launcher and T.I.M.E… .1 preferred giving practice tests in the morning (on weekends). After the practice test, I would chill out for five-six hours. We were six people (all colleagues) living together in a flat in Hyderabad. Then we would analyse the test.., what made the other person decide on this set? How did he get it right and so on, says Luthra, in a telephonic interview.
Initially I experimented with different sets - first taking DI and Maths. This reader of two-three major newspapers and the same number of magazines and fiction then decided to attack first the English section, his stoutest area. This helped him ramp up his confidence, he says. I preferred doing Maths in the end. If you miss a question in Maths, you lose (only) one mark.
Ask him for some pearls of advice for aspirants and he responds, Tips are dodgy. Then he says, Your method is your own. If your English is not strong, start reading. You can pick up Maths and DI later. In coaching classes, they teach in a rule-based way whereas with reading it becomes intuitive. It will help you in bringing down the options.
