NID launches colour lab
The National Institute of Design (NID) has announced the launch of its Colour Research Laboratory at the NID R&D Campus, Bangalore. Supported by Asian Paints, this research lab will explore colour insights in India from a range of perspectives through a combination of research and design tools.
The objective is to chart the influences of colour on culture, geography, emotion, consumer behaviour, spaces and several other aspects of everyday life. We will work to establish a foundation for colour forecasting and a universal standard for research and design in colour, which as of yet, is uncharted territory in the Indian world of design, says Michael Foley, an NID alumnus who has taken on the responsibility of principal researcher at the colour lab. The centre will deploy a combination of permanent and project-based researchers and NID student fraternity to create a knowledge base for future extended research across several categories like spaces, furniture, product, textiles, visual communication, packaging, apparels, and accessories, adds Foley.
In its first year, the colour lab has outlined five projects focussing on building key strengths in design and research processes, though in the long term, it will seek to complete six to eight projects annually.
