Scholarships for IIT, IIM, minority studentsThe state minority affairs development department has announced a scheme offering scholarships to minority students studying in premier institutions like IIT and IIM and training facilities to those aspiring careers in airlines, hospitality sector, tourism, maritime and food processing. The scholarship scheme and training facilities are open to students whose family income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh. The merit cum means scholarship scheme, a central scheme is aimed at providing financial assistance to 2223 students of whom 2132 would be Muslims. The annual fees at the IIMs is around Rs 2,00,000 per annum. With Sachar Committee exposing the Left Front governments little achievements in terms of minority development and with panchayat elections round the corner, the state government has announced a number of sops and development projects for the minorities. While the scholarship would cover full course fee for students studying in sixty premier institution like IIM, NIT and IIT those in other institutions will be paid annual course fee upto Rs 20,000 and hostel and other charges. Coaching facilities would be available for entrance examination into professional courses and for competitive examinations. Applications can be sent to the managing director, West Bengal Minorities Development and Finance Corporation within 30 September. Upliftment of minorities will not be possible unless they get education. We will even allow private coaching centres which have good success rate, said Mr Abdus Sattar, minister of state, minorities development affairs. The state government will also hold a convention on 18 October to discuss about the sub-plan prepared by it with minority MPs and MLAs as well as people from ISI, IIT and IIM participating in it. PM adds caveat to minority tune PM Manmohan Singh on Wednesday sketched out the political frame for pro-minority measures when he said while Muslims deserved an equal share of development, this should be come without hurting growth and reducing incentives for enterprise and creativity. Speaking at a Dalit-minority conference, PM made a careful reference to Muslims in the context of the Sachar report. Perhaps keen to avoid the flak that followed his first claim on resources remark at the National Development Council, PM made it evident that special initiatives for the community did not mean skewing priorities. Source dh Date 2005-06-10 Information The governments share of medical and dental seats will come down by 147 and 150 seats respectively compared to last year following the State Cabinet accepting 50:50 ratio for seat sharing between government and private medical and dental colleges. A 60:40 ratio was adopted in 2004. Source The Hindu Date 2006-07-14 Information The Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking an ex parte interim stay on the order of a single judge in the Karnataka High Court directing the State to take over the counselling and admission procedure for postgraduate (PG) dental courses. In its interlocutory application (IA), the association sought a declaration that it had the right to conduct a common entrance test (CET) for admission to PG dental and medical courses for linguistic and religious institutions.

Petitioners Nithin N. Bhaskar, Santosh Ashok Nandimath and eight others said they had been selected in a fresh round of counselling for admission to colleges under the Karnataka Religious and Linguistic Minority Private Colleges Association (KRLMPCA). Felix Scholarships (India) The scholarships are open to Indian graduates starting a degree at Oxford in October 2007 to read for a taught graduate course or for a Master's/DPhil degree by research, who would be unable, without financial assistance,to take up their place. The hype created over the announcement made by the HRD ministry on free education scheme for the single girl child will not benefit many. From the official records, it is now evident that the scheme isnt universal in its applications, nor will it come into force with retrospective effect. The scheme is applicable to only those taking admission to schools seeking CBSE affiliation from the next academic year. This means schools that are already affiliated to CBSE are not in this list.
