School consolidation: How small is too small

State policymakers will never convince Cori Bortnem that she’d have received a better education at a school bigger than Rutland High.

They won’t convince the South Dakota State University senior that the state should tell local communities when it’s time to close their schools.

We received almost one-on-one education sometimes. All the courses I wanted were available, either there or through a (distance-learning) program. And the teachers were really aggressive in telling us about scholarships that could help us with college, Bortnem said.
