Back Federal Grant Enhances Distance Education at Extended Campuses

Students who take courses via interactive television (ITV) at Eastern Kentucky Universitys extended campuses will soon enjoy the benefits of some powerful, new, state-of-the-art technology, thanks to a $307,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and an additional $216,946 in matching funds from the University.

The funds will provide new hardware and software for EKU campuses in Corbin, Danville and Manchester, as well as the Lancaster Higher Education Center, a collaborative venture between EKU and Bluegrass Community and Technical College. The equipment will utilize both Polycom and Tandberg products for two-way videoconferencing and other infrastructure support and will provide a better interface with the entire state system.

Interactive television remains an important way of delivering classes to our extended campuses, said Bill St. Pierre, interim dean of EKU Continuing Education and Outreach, who authored the grant proposal, and this robust technology will serve us well for many years to come.
