UI Distance Learning Changes, Keeps Up With the Times

Filed under:

E-mail, laptops. Blackberries. Today we are programmed to never stop working or even learning.

Continuing education keeps changing. Today, it is known as distance learning. You take courses online, using your computer. In the old days students would mail their correspondence to professors. The process has changed, but the idea is the same. Give people an Iowa education even if they cannot get to the Iowa campus.

At 20 minutes after the hour, you will see the flood of students wash across campus. About 30,000 students attend the University of Iowa. Nancy Romine works with a small fraction who might never set foot on campus. She said, “I help them navigate the UI system which can be large and intimidating to them.”

Romine is a counselor with the Division of Continuing Education at Iowa. About 300 students take distance learning courses from their personal computer. Rachel Ayers is one of them. She spends her nights studying non-profit organization. She does not have time to physically go to class. Not with two young mouths to feed and a job teaching at southeast junior high. For Ayers it is all about the children. When she is not teaching or mothering, she is taking distance education to create an after school program for junior high and high school students. Ayers said, “Working with these kids, I would hate to see them go down the wrong path because they don’t have anything else to do.”

One day Ayers saw two former students at the mall being hassled by security. She said, “And thought, this is it. The kids really need something to do.”

Ayers needs to learn how to create an after-school program. That is why she is back in school. But her hectic schedule does not fit a classroom. Distance learning is her best option so she can help the children.

Ayers hopes to have her school work finished and an after school program up and running in two years.
