Swinburne launches its new vision

SWINBURNE University of Technology (SUT), Melbourne, Australia, which recently turned 100, started its new innings celebrating its achievements as well as launching its vision for 2015 and beyond.

The university would be hosting a number of celebrations throughout the year in Australia and overseas. While its India-specific celebrations were held in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai recently to promote its global aspirations.

Stephen Connelly, pro-vice-chancellor, international and development, SUT, while speaking about the road ahead for the university said: Our new vision is to position Swinburne among the top 10 institutions in Australia, particularly in terms of research. If we can achieve that we would definitely be among the top 500 universities of the world.

The university at present has 22,600 students across its six campuses in Melbou rne and one in Sarawak, Malaysia. A number of Swinburne programmes are being delivered offshore like China, Hong Kong, Israel and Vietnam. On its attempt at global positioning, We have campuses in Australia, Malaysia and are offering programmes in Vietnam, China and Singapore, among others. Part of our plan is to extend our research initiatives throughout Asia, added Connelly.

A technology-foe ussed university, 90% of the enrolled students are in business, science, engineering and technology programmes that are fundamental to Australias growing manufacturing sector. On a strategic alliance of Swinburne with India, the pro-vice-chan-cellor said the university is looking to extend its institutional partnerships in the field ofcollaborative research. So we have a new pro-vice-chancellor of research who was previously working in India. We have identified seven areas where we would like to collaborate with Indian institutions, like photonics, astrophysics, social science, brain science, industrial and engineering research, said Connelly.

Among other major plans is to invest 250 million Australian dollars in infrastructure development in the next five years, of which 100 million Australian dollars would be towards Advance Component Building, a state-of-the-art facility for engineering and research.
