Curb on Net use won’t work, say students

Filed under:

IIT Delhi may plan to restrict internet usage in hostel rooms to stop students from spending their nights downloading movies, but students here doubt if the ban will remain effective for long. They admit that there is grave misuse of the internet in hostels, however, they are also sure that students can find a way out to keep using the internet for leisure.

‘‘IIT Delhi had limited the use of Land Area Network (LAN) six months ago also. But then students protested and all restrictions were lifted after a couple of days. We all know that things like this are not possible in IIT.

Students will create an alternative,'’ said Chinmay Agarwal, third-year electrical engineering student.

And the result of this alternative, as revealed by insiders, simply bears out the tech-genius of IITians. According to a final year student, who did not wish to be named, students often download data on LAN to the tune of 500 GB a month while they are allowed only 70-80 MB per week.

‘‘Some students with a dab hand in networking hack the computers at central centre on the campus using a software called Putty. This enables each of their terminals to function like a proxy server which has no limit on the amount of data downloaded. And the speed is such that an entire film can be downloaded in 10 minutes,'’ said the student.

Students agree that such a step can jeopardise their IIT degree, however, they add that there are always a few students in every year, who still go ahead and take the risk. ‘‘Students do use the internet for chatting, or for downloading movies and often miss the morning lectures. But simply restricting a few sites can solve the problem,'’ said Sushain Trehan from third-year, chemical engineering.

Restricting the internet or LAN will hamper their working routine also, say the students.

‘‘We also make our presentations using internet resources. As a habit, we start working on projects after midnigtht to be submitted next morning. If the authorities block the internet during night hours, we will be at a great loss,'’ said Varun Arora, a final-year student of chemical engineering.
