ADB funds to boost higher education

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to provide US $ 60 million in stages as a loan facility to establish distance-learning centres in several areas of the country and to provide scholarships for needy students, Ministry of Higher Education said.

Addressing a seminar held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, the Distant Education Modernisation Project (DEMP) governing council said by enhancing the activities of the online distance educational services, thousands of students could achieve higher education in various faculties.DEMP Project Director, N.S. Abeywardena said the government had entered into partnership with 13 public and private higher educational institutes to promote online distance learning where US $ 1.5 million has been allocated from the ADB.

A public Higher Education Institute will receive a maximum of Rs. 5 million and a private institute a maximum of Rs. 2.5 million, depending on the duration of programmes and the amount of students.

“Students from families with a consolidated monthly income of Rs. 20,000 are entitled to a scholarship of Rs. 50,000 which the DEMP will pay directly to the relevant institution,” he said.
