Class VIII ‘engineering students’ learn nitty-gritty of computer science at IIM-AIn a first in the country, the Duke University, Durham, USA in partnership with the IIM-Ahmedabad is conducting a training programme for a selected group of Class VIII students. The initiative envisages providing them with ‘college level’ knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering and computer science. The course that commenced on May 18 at the IIM-A campus has 34 students from 13 schools across four Indian cities selected by the university’s Talent Identification Programme (TIP) team. Reputed English medium schools in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi were asked to shortlist some of their best Class VIII students out of which the 34 were selected. The three-week course has two components of engineering— problem solving and Java video games. As a part of the course, the students will learn to make engineering models of windmills, bridges and design video games. All the nine instructors part of the TIP have come from the US for the programme. The cost of the inaugural course has been fully borne by the TIP. A class VIII girl from Tamil Nadu has designed a controlled discharge toilet that could make disposal of human waste on tracks a thing of the past. Mashia Najim, a student of a private school in Nagercoil, used a solenoid and valve to ensure human waste wasnt dumped on the tracks. The Hygiene Drainage Disposing system has already won the first prize in two science exhibitions. Receives National Scholarship Dixie State College has received a four-year National Science Foundation Scholarship that will be given out to selected freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in computer science, computer technology, engineering and biology. This scholarship is open to all students who apply in time for the deadline and show financial need. The National Science Foundation Scholarships will pay full tuition and fees with some extra money for books. Based on the recommendations of National Curriculum Framework (NCF), NCERT in association with CBSE has drafted a new curriculum for the school students, thereby giving enough importance to the cognitive abilities of students. Under this new curriculum the NCERT would publish new text books in social science, science, history, mathematics and languages at primary and senior secondary level. Thursday, February 10, 2005 The Johns Hopkins University of Maryland has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. The American university will also sign similar pacts with the IITs of Mumbai and New Delhi, Chris Foster, Maryland deputy secretary for business and economic development, said. "Computer science, informatics, electrical engineering and micro electrical engineering are areas of partnership identified for cooperation with Indian institutions of technology and science", he said. He said he held talks for collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, earlier in the week.
Scientist receives 2007 NSF career award Ritesh Agarwal has received the 2007 Faculty Early Career Award from the National Science Foundation. The award is given to young faculty members in all science and engineering fields. Agarwal is an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, US.
